These rivers, once home to four of the world’s five species, now face unprecedented pressure from a state policy aimed at expanding groundwater extraction, which could jeopardize their survival. What makes this situation particularly concerning is the lack of transparency and precautionary measures in the decision-making process. The proposal to double water allocations ignores the cultural and environmental significance of these ecosystems, raising questions about sustainability and the responsibility of modern infrastructure. In my opinion, the solution must involve more collaboration between governments, communities, and scientists to ensure that progress doesn’t come at the expense of nature.
